Source Design Services; a specialist utility engineering design consultancy and part of leading engineering service provider McNicholas Group, has reached the half way mark in the delivery of designs for the upgrade of 170km of the Sussex Route rail infrastructure.
This major milestone is part Source’s biggest ever contract for Network Rail and part of its Control Period 5 Delivery Plans, which have been designed to improve service resilience, certainty of power supply and improved frequency of trains for The Sussex Route; the ‘spine and rib’ route of the Brighton Main Line, which runs from London Victoria to Brighton.
With more than 500 design submissions in total, Source is providing designs for the ancillary civils, under-track (UTX) and under-road (URX) crossings, electric track equipment, positive and negative cabling, signalling assurance and Critical Rail Temperature management along the route. The biggest element of the contract, however, is the upgrade to the power supply and associated equipment. This will facilitate service growth and maintenance switch-outs; improving working conditions and safety for Network Rail’s operational staff by moving equipment further away from the track to positions of safety. This will also help meet the future development requirement of this route, which is the busiest and most densely congested within the network.
“Our contract with Network Rail is unique in that it is our biggest ever to date, and that it requires us to operate in a design engineering management capacity, where we coordinate and oversee up to five other specialist design contractors at any one time, while also operating in a hands-on specialist contractor role,” explained Business Director for Source Design Services, Rob Campbell.
Source commenced work on the contract for Network Rail in January 2016, and is on track to complete the works by the beginning of April 2017
