POINTS HEATING AT IPSWICH

CHALLENGE

• To design a new points heating system at Ipswich Goods Junction to replace the existing that was near the end of its service life
• The UTX that we were to use was almost at full capacity
• To minimise disruption to passengers and goods traffic at a junction with 28 switching points and four points heating cubicles along eight tracks used by multi-speed trains


SOLUTION

• Extensive survey work and interrogation of the record information allowed us to complete the design and gain a Category 1 sign off on the scheme
• Source worked closely with the client to ensure that the design solution was as lean as was viable therefore mitigating the need for further crossings
• Source’s Design Management team of Design CREs and CEMs brought their experience to bear on the scheme; working closely with their opposite numbers within Network Rail they were able to ensure the design was fully compliant

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

• Category One sign off of the design programme met despite challenges in relation to surveying possessions
• Client aspirations met in terms of design solution
